Gogol Bordello

Here's the band that's dominating my iPod lately. Gogol Bordello's Super Taranta! It's Gypsy Punk and friggin' awesome. Reminds me a lot of Deda Mladek back in 2002. Here's some vids of some of their songs in the album. Wanderlust I think is the best and should be designated as some kind of anthem for anyone who becomes a man of the world. Ultimate has the best verse "There were never any good old days. They are today. They are tomorrow. It's a stupid thing we say cursing tomorrow with sorrow". I don't know what it means but thats some deep shit.

I love me my new music

Anyone who knows me knows I don't have any faith in local Filipino music anymore. Regine Velasquez: shouts. Eraserheads Tribute Album from a few years ago: too early to do and it smacks of effort. Local Mainstream Music Industry in general: endless renditions, versions, covers of old music from Apo Hiking Society, David Pomeranz, etc. Local Reggae Movement: Singing an existing song in a reggae-like fashion is not or does not make it reggae. It's just gay and not in a good way. Even the new music from local talent doesn't sound interesting.

Maybe one exception is Sino Sikat?. I saw them play in Megamall back in 2006 and they're very good. Came in late to Java class just to listen to the rest of their set. Haven't heard anything new from them since I don't listen to the radio much anymore. Long story short I'm looking elsewhere for new music to listen to. Found some music I can listen to. Got me some Yael Naim, The Ting Tings, Lykke Li, Adele, Gym Class Heroes, Ingrid Michaelson, She & Him, Ani DiFranco, DevotchKa, Lightspeed Champion, Emmy the Great and Gogol Bordello. These are mostly Indie music from the US and most have never been heard of here.

I embrace this new music wholeheartedly. Which, at the risk of a decade-long teasing from my friends, also includes Miley Cyrus' 7 Things. There I said it. It had to be said. Having said that my taste in music is very wide and varied. Though it's sad I don't like new local music anymore. Even the new ones.
