Batwing #1 in September

Batwing #1
Batwing_cvr1

DC Comics bills Batwing as the first black character to wear the Bat mantle. I have no idea how to react to that. The costume could be better though. Batwing will be written by Judd Winick and illustrated by Ben Oliver. Someone lend me a copy when it comes out.

Red Hood And The Outlaws #1 in September

Red Hood And The Outlaws #1
Red_hood_cv1_r1

Cover shows Red Hood (guy with the red mask and guns), Arsenal (guy with the trucker hat and bow) and Starfire (alien gal with the ridiculously long hair). Written by Scott Lobdell and Drawn by Kenneth Rocafort. Don't know what to say about this book. Someone lend me a copy when it comes out.

Nightwing #1 in September

Nightwing #1
Unknownname

Dick Grayson ends his (short) career as Batman (again) and returns as Nightwing with his abstract symbol red instead of blue. Kinda symbolizes a more sinister Nightwing. Moving on,. Crotch shot. Not the best way to introduce a character to new readers. Although I should say the same for Guillem March's Catwoman piece earlier with the boob shot. Written by Kyle Higgins and Drawn by Eddy Barrows

Gail Simone confirms Barbara Gordon as Batgirl

Gail Simone writes
... For many years, I got to write the character as Oracle, and there is to this day, no character who means more to me. This is classic Barbara as she was originally conceived, with a few big surprises. It’s a bit of a shock, to be sure, but we’re doing everything we can to be respectful to this character’s amazing legacy, while presenting something thrilling that a generation of comics readers will be experiencing for the first time…

... Barbara Gordon leaping, fighting, and swinging over Gotham. Now, when citizens of that city look up, they are going to see BATGIRL.

And that is absolutely thrilling.

I guess that's that. Lots of questions for this one.

The Bat ladies get #1ss in September

Batwoman #1
Bw_cv1

It's Batwoman by J.H. Williams III, Haden Blackman and Amy Reeder. If you got a copy of the Batwoman: Elegy trade or hardcover or any issue of that storyline, give it to someone who hasn't seen Batwoman. Then show them this. Make them want Batwoman. Buy, buy, buy!

Batgirl #1

Bg_cv1_solicitation_only

Okay. No question on who that redhead is. Barbara Gordon. Barbara Gordon is able to walk again. I'm happy she can walk again. But I ain't thrilled she's Batgirl again. Lots of questions around this. What happened in Flashpoint for her to become Batgirl again? How is she able to walk again? Why does she have to stop being Oracle? What happens to Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain? Can or will she double as Oracle while she's Batgirl? New readers can flock to this title easy. Old readers will snatch this up cause of the nostalgia factor. Others like me will grab this cause Gail Simone is writing it. Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes will be on pencils.

Catwoman #1

Ctw_cv1

Written by Judd Winick and drawn by Guillem March. Sexy, pretty pictures. Actually I'm wondering where Judd Winick is taking Selina. Will she see her daughter again. Does she still know Batman's secret identity? Someone lend me a copy when it comes out.

Birds of Prey #1

Bop_cv1_solicit

New roster for the team: Poison Ivy in the back., blonde with the net stockings slippers is Black Canary I assume, No idea who the lady samurai and the girl in the middle are. Written by Duane Swierczynski and drawn by Jesus Raiz. Sad that Gail Simone not writing it anymore. This looks to be an all new all different Birds of Prey. A question though: Whats the point of the blonde wearing a full-body net suit? If that is Black Canary, there has got to be some other way for others to identify her as Black Canary other than net stockings. Someone lend me a copy when it comes out.

Batman And Robin #1 And Batman: The Dark Knight #1

Batman And Robin #1
Bm_rob_cv1

Bruce and Damian Wayne as Batman and Robin. A father and son team. A father and son team fighting crime. Family dynamics and such. By Peter Tomasi and Pat Gleason. You should buy it.

Batman: The Dark Knight #1

Bmtdk_cv1

Another Batbook with Bruce Wayne in his solo adventures. This first issue brings Bruce Wayne to Arkham Asylum. Drawn and written by David Finch with Jay Fabok on pencils too. To be honest I don't see the point of this book. DC is already releasing Batman and Detective Comics which tell Batman's solo adventures. What makes this different from those two and Batman and Robin. I mean what's the hook for new readers here. Someone lend me a copy when it comes out.

Batman #1 And Detective Comics #1 in September

Batman #1
Bm_cv1

Detective Comics #1
Dtc_cv11

Sweet! Scott Snyder writes and Greg Capullo draws for Batman and Tony Daniel is on Art and Story for Detective Comics. It's Bruce Wayne as the sole holder of the Batman name again. Not that thats a bad thing but I was really looking forward to many more years of whats happening in the Bat books. You got your Batman Inc, Dick Grayson as Batman, Cassandra Cain has come back, Barbara Gordon is mentoring Stephanie Brown (Makings of a Batgirl, Inc right there)  Both books look to be very familiar to old readers and a very approachable introduction to new readers. Just hope theres enough of a hook to keep new readers. Plus you get to say you have a copy of Batman #1 and Detective Comics #1. Should buy both just for that alone.

Four Green Lantern Comics coming in September

Gl_cv1_teaser

GREEN LANTERN #1 - written by Geoff Johns (not surprised) and drawn by Doug Manke and Christian Alamy. This is gonna be a Hal Jordan book isn't it? Ugh. Pass.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #1 - The book that has John Stewart. Guy Gardner too, so he's got double duty on OA and Justice League International. Written by Peter J Tomasi. With him and Johns on the GL books, nothing can go wrong with these books. Definite buy.

GREEN LANTERN: THE NEW GUARDIANS #1 The Kyle Rainer book. "Who are The New Guardians? The power of Rage, Avarice, Fear, Will, Hope, Compassion and Love combine to be the most powerful (and colorful) team in the corps under the leadership of Kyle Rayner. Beware their power . . . and their volatility!" It's a wait and see for me.

RED LANTERNS #1 - "Going solo. Atrocitus and his Red Lantern Corps return in their own series, battling against injustice in the most bloody ways imaginable. This Lantern Corps takes no prisoners, they are judge, jury and executioners!" Peter Milligan writing with Ed Benes and Rob Hunter on pencils. This must be the weird book of the bunch. Let's wait and see.

Overall it's some more of the old. DC is really banking on the GL movie to be a hit while hoping that any new reader they're able to catch will like (appreciate?) the established nostalgia of the Green Lantern. Seven corps and not a spotlight on any woman, humanoid or not, from any corps. DC has really got to take a risk here and get a diverse array of fans. Get the hint? Personally I'm just following John Stewart. Would've loved it more if he was the upcoming Justice League's GL instead of instead of Hal.

DC releases first 11 titles for Septembers relaunch. Should you buy them?

DC has released it's first 11 titles for September's relaunch.

Justice League #1

Jla_cv11

Pro: Geoff Johns and Jim Lee are the creative team, Con: Will Jim Lee keep to a monthly schedule? Pro: Cyborg is finally in the team, Con: His suit looks like a throw back to the 90s. Pro: GL and Flash are in it, Con: They're not John Stewart and Wally West. Someone lend me a copy when it comes out.

Wonder Woman #1

Wwv2_cv1

The costume is an improvement but why switch the gold to silver? I'm curious about Brian Azzarello writing Diana and Cliff Chiang is an automatic buy, so definitely buy.

Aquaman #1

Aqm_cv1

Honestly, I am really hoping Aquaman lasts this time. I still think the closest approximation to Aquaman's costume that looked best was Bruce Willis' cab suit in The Fifth Element. Will buy cause Geoff Johns.is writing it despite my belief that Geoff Johns is spreading himself thin.

The Flash #1

Flsv3_cv1

Not Wally West. I consider Barry Allen icon status and should be part of Wally West's supporting cast. More on that on at another time. I'm skipping the Flash again..

The Fury of Firestorm #1

Firestorm_cv1

Not liking the the title. "Firestorm" is awesome by itself. And can someone get rid of Ronnie Raymond. Wasn't Ronnie in College during Joe Kelly's run on JLA? why take him back to high school? I am curious about Ethan Van Sciver co-writing the book with Gail Simone who is a solid buy. Will buy it cause of Gail Simone plus Jason Rusch is still alive.

The Savage Hawkman #1

Svghkman_cv1

Never got interested in Hawkman. Even when Geoff Johns wrote him. Although I did enjoy reading the jerry-curled Carter Hall with fake wings in the 80s. Curious about Tony Daniel writing him. Still can't decide.

Green Arrow #1

Ga_cv1

Like Hawkman, never got interested in GA at all. Even when Kevin Smith wrote him. There's something off about him. Don't know enough about JT Krul's writing chops. Not gonna buy.

Justice League International #1

Jlifinalcover1

Curious about this too. Kinda tepid on the roster, but this team would be perfect for adding revolving 10th, 11th and 12th chairs guesting international superheroes. Would've loved to have Steel, Geo Force, and Donna Troy in the core roster. Who's that girl in black in the lower left? Awesome that Vixen's given a proper collar. What's up with Booster's costume change? Gonna buy it.

Mr Terrific #1

Mr_terr_cv1

One of my favorite DC characters. Fuck Yeah. Michael Holt gets his own series. I hope it's an ongoing one. Definitely buy.

Captain Atom #1

Catom_cv1

Never had an interest in the character except when he went to the Wildstorm Universe. Don't know enough about JT Kruls writing chops. Someone lend me a copy when it comes out.

DC Universe Presents #1

Dcu_presents_1_final_400

Don't know enough about Deadman to make a call. Someone lend me copy when it comes out.

Good Luck to DC and I hope these titles succeed.

Mr Terrific #1 in September

Hello DC.

Here's the solicit for September's Mr Terrific #1

"The world’s third-smartest man – and one of its most eligible bachelors – uses his brains and fists against science gone mad in MISTER TERRIFIC #1, the new series from writer Eric Wallace and artist Roger Robinson. The cover to issue #1 is by J.G. Jones."

Things not to do when introducing Mr Terrific to the world:

1. Don't give him a one piece bathing suit from the 1920s even if it is futuristic looking. His first costume was fine and bad ass.
2. Don't have him pose in a non-heroic and awkward ... pose. I can't tell if he's in mid-movement. No self-respecting decathlete and multiple PhD-holding millionaire would pose like that.
3. Stop rubbing it in that he's the third smartest man. It's kinda degrading in it's own way. Like placing fourth in the Olympics. There are readers (probably just me) who think he is as smart as Bruce Wayne (who happens to be the World's smartest man) if not smarter.
4. I cant think of a fourth right now.
In any case, please let this be a good first issue and I hope it leads to an ongoing series. Mr Terrific is an amazing and complex character who has made his mark in the DC Universe and has been one of my favorites since I first read the guy in the previous JSA series.
